Purrs McBarkin' is an independent pet nutrition store in Hartsville, South Carolina built with one simple goal: do right by pets and the people who love them.
This store was built from the ground up to help pet owners make better decisions for their dogs and cats. Not by chasing trends or repeating marketing claims, but by focusing on nutrition, ingredients, and what actually supports long term health.
Purrs McBarkin' is not part of a chain, franchise, or corporate rollup. It is a small independent shop right here in Hartsville. I show up Tuesday through Saturday to help people find the right food for their dogs and cats. The goal is to cut through the noise, ignore gimmicks, and focus on what truly supports healthy dog and cat nutrition.
I started this business because I saw a problem. Too many pet foods promise everything while delivering very little. Clever marketing hides weak ingredients, and pets end up paying the price. I believed there had to be a better way, so I built one.
Every product on these shelves is chosen carefully and backed by science. If I would not feed it to my own animals, it does not come through the door. The focus is simple: quality ingredients, honest nutrition, and products that support healthier lives for dogs and cats.
I am certified in canine and feline nutrition through Southern Illinois University. That matters not just because the science is solid, but because the program is independent. There are no pet food sponsorships and no industry funding. Just education that was earned through study and a real commitment to understanding animal nutrition.
That same independence carries through to the Purrs McBarkin' wellness blog . There are no ads, no affiliate links, and no hidden agendas. The goal is simple: share clear, science-based information that helps people understand how nutrition affects the health of their pets.
This store was built on trust. Whether you are stopping in to find better food, explore healthier treats, or simply ask a few questions, the goal is to create a place that feels calm, personal, and focused on the wellbeing of your animals.
Stay as long as you like. Visit when you are ready. If something here helps you feel more informed, more confident, or more connected to the animals who depend on you, pass that knowledge on. When people understand nutrition better, pets live better lives.
Your pets deserve the best. I am here to help you give it to them.

Dr. Karen Becker and Rodney Habib have helped bring global attention to the importance of pet nutrition, ingredient transparency, and the long term impact diet has on the health of dogs and cats. Their work inspired me to look deeper into the science of nutrition and the role it plays in helping animals live longer, healthier lives.
That inspiration ultimately led me to pursue my certification in canine and feline nutrition through Southern Illinois University. Today, that same commitment to education and evidence-based nutrition guides everything I do at Purrs McBarkin’.

Farmina produces dog and cat foods formulated to meet established nutritional standards, with an emphasis on animal based proteins and carefully selected ingredients. Their recipes are formulated to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles for dogs and cats, and the company also operates under European pet food regulations and nutritional guidelines, including oversight aligned with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and FEDIAF standards.
Many pets do well on Farmina diets, particularly those whose owners are looking for foods with clearly defined ingredients and balanced nutrient composition. As with any pet food, suitability depends on the individual animal, their life stage, health status, and how they respond over tim

Fromm is a family owned company that manufactures its pet foods in company owned facilities, allowing for direct oversight of production. Their recipes are formulated to meet AAFCO nutritional profiles and focus on balanced nutrition using a variety of animal proteins and whole food ingredients.
Fromm offers a broad range of formulas and protein options, making it easier to match food choices to different life stages, preferences, and sensitivities. As with all diets, individual results depend on the specific pet and how they respond to a given formula.
Victor manufactures its dog foods in the United States and focuses on nutrient dense recipes with a higher proportion of animal based protein sources. Their formulas are designed to meet AAFCO nutritional profiles and include added probiotics intended to support normal digestive function.
Victor diets are often suited to dogs with higher activity levels or owners looking for a traditional kibble with increased protein content. As with any food, the best fit depends on the individual dog’s needs, lifestyle, and tolerance.
Smallbatch produces frozen raw and lightly cooked dog and cat foods made with limited ingredient recipes and animal based proteins as the primary components. Their foods are minimally processed compared to traditional kibble and are formulated to meet AAFCO nutritional profiles when fed as directed.
These diets appeal to pet owners seeking alternatives to highly processed foods. As with any feeding approach, suitability depends on the individual pet, household handling practices, and how the animal responds over time.
